Newport-Mesa High School Students Receive Orange County Youth Sports Foundation Scholarships

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is proud to announce two students who were selected to receive the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (OCYSF) Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Award. Only 13 of the more than 100 applicants from throughout the county were awarded the scholarship.

Now in its 48th year, the Scholar-Athlete Scholarship is given to students who show exemplary athletic and community involvement, academic achievements, and campus leadership. The scholar-athletes were each awarded $2,500 based on their academic and athletic merits.

The 2019 NMUSD scholar-athletes are:          

Alina Aguirre

  • Alina Aguirre, Newport Harbor High School
    Sport: Varsity wrestling
    Scholastic Honors: Valedictorian, Awards of Academic Excellence, Student of the Semester Award.
    Extra-Curricular Activities: Newport Beach Police Explorers, Newport Harbor High School Theater, Co-founder and President of 5 Branches Art Club, Bridges Club member.
    Future Plans: San Diego State University where she plans to study criminal justice and psychology.


    Gianna Finear
     
  • Gianna Finear, Corona del Mar High School
    Sport: Varsity Golf
    Scholastic Honors: Valedictorian, Honor Society Member, Gold Seal Bearer Candidate, NMUSD Seal of Excellence.
    Extra-Curricular Activities: Hoag Hospital Volunteer, Human Relations Council Board Member, Future Business Leaders of America, Academy of Global Studies.
    Future Plans: Brown University where she plans to study computer engineering as well as economics or global business.

The OCYSF was founded in 1971 and provides local athletes with scholarships, hosts various community outreach programs, among other activities.

Students were honored at an OCYSF scholarship banquet and will also be recognized at their school’s award ceremonies.
